Top 10 Vegan Wines
Hands up who tried Veganuary? And keep your hands up if you remained vegan? From the amount of times we get asked 'which of your wines are vegan?' we think quite a few of you are sat reading this with your arm still raised! So have you tried vegan wine?
Many are fooled into thinking that wine is plant based and regarded safe for a vegan diet. But this is not strictly true as animal products, including eggs and milk proteins, may be used during the fining process - the part that makes the wine clear and gives it a purer taste.
As always, we're here to help and we hope this guide to our top 10 vegan wines will tempt you to maybe try out something new.
In no particular order:
1. Soraighe Valpolicella Ripasso
This super-charged Italian belter is one of our all-time favourites! A rich, full bodied red which we have nicknamed 'the baby Amarone' is bursting with bittersweet cherry notes with a redcurrant and cranberry undertone.
2. Pouilly Fume Coteau des Girarmes
This classic, Sauvignon Blanc style, French white oozes the flinty-smoky style of Pouilly Fume. It greets you with elderflower and citrus notes on the nose with fresh grass to the palate.
3. Bonfire Hill Extreme Vineyards Red
An intriguing, inviting blend of red summer fruits, spring fynbos flowers, Indian spice and just a hint of toasty oak on the nose. The palate is surprisingly decadent, rich, with almost creamy tannins. You'll find raspberries, blackberries, ripe plum and a hint of pepper, spice and leather on the palate. It is balanced, with just the tiniest prod of refreshing, salty acid, like a playful poke of Neptune's trident!
4. 667 Pinot Noir
This Californian red has a light touch of oak ageing so as not to overpower the natural fruit characteristics of the Pinot Noir grape. You get aromas of black raspberry and the tannins are lush with cherry, chocolate and spice on the palate.
5. 337 Cabernet Sauvignon
This remains a firm favourite with our customers, again from the Californian family. This smooth red wine overflows with ripe notes of blackcurrant, spicy oak and roasted coffee.
6. 446 Chardonnay
At last, a white wine from the Californian Noble range. This stunner has delicious aromas of apricots, pineapple and toffee with a palate of creamy vanilla and oak.
7. Eschenhof Holzer Eisenhut Zweigelt
This sumptuous Zweigelt, the main red grape from Austria, is packed with the taste of black cherries, cassis and dark chocolate. In every sense, it's a powerful mouth-full!
8. Vinteloper Watervale Riesling
This classically Aussie Riesling has aromas of lime, jasmine and green apple. So thirst-quenching, all we need is the Australian weather here and life would be perfect!
9. Donnafugata Sherazade
Some may say we have saved the best until last - this gorgeous Sicilian red is full of strawberry and raspberry fruit on the nose. Its palate is fresh and vibrant with notes of sour cherries and more strawberry. If you're a fan of the Nero d'Avola grape you'll love this.
10. Mil Historias Bobal Organic Wine
This is a stonking wine! With aromas of ripe red fruit, this is a hugely lively wine!
