Pimp Up Your Pancakes!
With Valentine's Day behind us and Easter weeks away, what are we going to do for a self-indulgent fix to bridge the gap? Hurrah for Pancake Day!
To give it it's proper name - Shrove Tuesday is here on Tuesday 28 February. Some people call it Pancake Tuesday, that's just weird. The French call it Fat Tuesday, that's just plain rude.
Why Pancakes?
The celebrated day always takes place on the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Christian season of Lent. Traditionally, it was a day for using up food that could not be eaten during Lent, which was a time for fasting. A great use of leftover eggs and butter.
Why Shrove?
Shrove comes from the word shrive meaning to confess and receive absolution; it was custom to confess sins before Lent. According to legend, pancake racing first started in the 15th century when a Buckinghamshire woman rushed to confess her sins while making pancakes and took her pan to church. Maybe she strayed from Delia's trusted recipe (sharp intake of breath!).
Why Not?
Sugar and lemon will always remain a firm favourite in many households, but why not throw caution to the wind and try something new. What about something like:
* Mushroom and our delicious Brie de Meaux
* Fruit and a spoonful of the local honey we stock
* Avocado, lime juice and slithers of the sumptuous John Ross Scottish Smoked Salmon
* Butternut squash and the award winning Colston Bassett Stilton
* Nutty crunch with the range of Funky Nut Peanut Butters
* Boozy Fruits - we've got Clementines in Vodka, Cherries in Kirsch or Apricots in Amaretto
Food for thought isn't it? Why not pop in to see us in Heswall, Frodsham or West Kirby to get inspiration from our fabulous range of food and cheeses?
From everyone at Whitmore & White we wish all our customers a happy and healthy Pancake Day.
