Terra d’Alter Tinto Reserva
This red Reserva wine is made by Peter Bright, an adventurous Australian wine-maker who travelled the Europe making wines and settled in Portugal where he set about modernizing the local wine scene focussing on bringing out the best in local indigenous grape varieties
The vineyard Boa Vista is just south of Portalegre in the Alto Alentejo some 300m to 600m above sea-level and the Alentejan plain to the south. Its still hot during day, tempered with Atlantic sea breezes, but cool nights allow the grapes some respite and keep that all-important freshness and acidity.
Mainly made with Trincadeira and Tinta Caiada grapes as well as some so-called mountain blends from the Serra Marvao these grapes are picked late for ripeness and undergo small tank fermentation with a lot of manual turning over or plunging to soften the tannins and then spend at least two years in used American oak barrels. The grapes are vinified separately and blended before being bottled.
This wine has wonderful aromatics and complex layered flavours of ripe black plum
