Raised by Charles Ross, the head gardener at Welford Park (Berkshire), in around 1890, this large apple with characteristic red-orange streaks is nearly always described as 'handsome'. The flesh is juicy but quite light and the flavour, slightly sweet but with the aromatic qualities of Cox's Orange Pippin. Since the beginning of Welsh Farmhouse, Charles Ross has always shone as one of their most popular juices.
