A yellow-gold colour with mat and amber tints. Persistent, brilliant, fine and lively bubbles. A subtle bouquet, simultaneously discreet and concentrated. It releases notes of citrus compote and candied apricots and evokes the sweetness of honeysuckle.
When aerated, notes of vanilla-edged cocoa bean emerge, with toasted hazelnut, hints of liquorice and even a touch of cinnamon. The palate is structured, energetic and sculpted. An initial dense, ripe and silky sensation is amplified by the discovery of a chalky, cherry freshness, a powdered, almost mentholated brightness. The feeling is delicate and ethereal, a succession of delicious and colourful textures perfectly integrated within the lightness and finesse of the wine... an invitation on a journey of discovery. The bright personality of Cristal then appears, simultaneously pure and sharp, in a finish focused once again on chalk, energy and grain.
About the Producer
Initially founded in 1776, Louis Roederer inherited the company from his uncle in 1833, renamed it and set out to target markets abroad, with concentrated efforts in several countries, including Russia. Tsar Nicholas II nominated Louis Roederer as the official wine supplier to the Imperial Court of Russia. Although the Russian Revolution and the U.S. Prohibition caused financial difficulties during the early 20th century, Roederer was re-established as a leading Grandes Marques producer. Cristal is a prestige cuvée brand and was made commercially available in 1945.
The Roederer non-vintage cuvées include the extra dry Brut Premier NV, Grand Vin Sec and the demi-sec Carte Blanche, all Pinot noir and Chardonnay blended approximately in 2:1 proportion, with a small portion of Pinot Meunier.
The vintage cuvées include the Brut Vintage, Rosé Vintage, with Pinot noir and Chardonnay in an approximately 7:3 proportion. The rosé is made by red wine addition rather than by saignée method used by some other Champagne houses.
The prestige cuvée Cristal is approximately a 50:50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It is also available as a rosé, which contains more Pinot noir and is also made by addition of red wine.
