TASTING NOTE
The nose has super fresh aromas of lemon and grapefruit citrus, with some garden florals and a distinct mineral quality. There are hints of nectarine and peachy stone-fruits and these explode into action on the palate all the while niftily balanced by that streak of minerality and crisp acidity.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Riverby Estate is a boutique wine estate occupying a prime site in Marlborough, being situated next door to iconic winery Cloudy Bay. In 1989 vines were first planted and grapes are now grown on the estate vineyard by descendants of the Matthews family, who have been farming the property for over 100 years. The land was originally used for cropping and sheep farming. Now over 70 hectares are planted out in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, Syrah and Gruner Veltliner.
The Matthews farm was called Riverby and the original property, shown on the Sauvignon Blanc back label, is still in use today.
The Riverby name originated from the Opawa River and its tributaries, which meandered through the property. In the 1930s, the river was diverted to avert flooding in the area. The rainbow trout on the Riverby label is a symbol of the fish that used to swim where grapes are now grown.
Previously Riverby exported wool to the world, now it is wine spreading the Riverby name far and wide. Markets have already grown to include the USA, UK, Canada, China, Japan and Singapore, as well as original major market, Australia.
We at Whitmore & White are massive fans of the Riverby Estate wines and you'll find a comprehensive selection on our shelves.
