Katie Butler

Katie has been in the wine trade for 22 years, starting as a wee starlet at Oddbins in 1999! It's all been downhill from there really! Ten years ago Katie founded Black Dog Wine Agency which specialises in wines of New Zealand, such as Riverby Estate, and South Africa, including Waverley Hills, all of which can be found on our shelves. Katie woke up one day and asked Dave (her husband) what was the worst thing that could happen if they imported a pallet of wine. And so they did and the rest is history!

On her days off you can find Katie walking Jet, the black dog who has more taste than I do in cardboard, lurking in Cheshire hostelries or watching cricket, a noble pastime of which I am still learning the rules many many years later!

We usually have a busy calendar of events here in Frodsham, but for now they are all on hold. Whether you're looking for a wine tasting, gin tasting, whisky tasting or Champagne, we host an array of different tastings all year, usually on a Saturday evening. We are regularly visited by wine importers and producers from all over the world who host tastings with us, and we always take the opportunity to show off our fantastic food alongside our wine! Well, why wouldn't we?

You can book places on our forthcoming tasting evenings here online, or call into the shop. You can also purchase Tasting Vouchers to give someone a great experience as a gift!

We also offer private tastings in store for groups, corporate clients and specialist event organisers. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

  • New Wine from Rhône and Burgundy

Keeping our range of wine fresh and new is a constant challenge for us. Balancing the need to keep customer favourites and best sellers on the shelf, whilst constantly keeping the range new and interesting is difficult to do without ending up needing an aircraft hangar! Those of you who know our shops will know that we are the antithesis of "hangar" so from time to time we have a good old review of our range. Continue reading

  • W&W Welcomes Top Rope Beer

Those of you who know me will know that I often get accosted by all manner of people who announce apropos of nothing that they have made a beer. "I've done a beer" they blurt, breathless with excitement, "it's made of cabbages and MDF!". I'm not sure if that's what they really say, but I've usually tuned out by that point. Such is the prevalence of craft beer now, trying to find the good stuff has become a dark art. If the moon is just right, sometimes you win. And this time I feel like I've won...  Continue reading

  • Takeaway Wines - Thai

All too often we spend ages deliberating over what to have from that Just Eat or Deliveroo menu and give next to no consideration to what wine might go with it, opening up whatever's in the fridge or wine rack because "it'll do Marjorie, it's just a takeaway". With more of us staying in-in rather than going out-out this year, we think we can do better than "it'll do"! So we're here to arm you with some suggestions Continue reading

  • A Tasty Trio of New Italian Wine

We don’t like to stand still at Whitmore & White so we're always on the lookout for new and interesting wine, spirits, beer and food. Following a bit of a spring clean of our wine range, we're pleased to welcome three fantastic new wines just in from Italy - a pair of Lugana whites and a tantalising Chianti Classico from Tuscany.  Continue reading
