STORE MANAGER - NICK THOMAS
Nick has inhabited the world of wine for so long that Bacchus and Dionysus probably asked him for advice! Nick is older than most of the vines that produce the grapes, that make the amazing wines on our shelves. His roots too go deep! Nick spent 8 years in France with his better half Laura, where they owned and ran a couple of Bar/Restaurants and his love of the European epicurean culture is deep seated. He has also spent a lot of time in Italy and counts as friends so many winemakers and restauranteurs, that he’ll never have to pay for a glass of wine or a meal for the rest of his life!
Nick created and taught a Wine Education Course for Liverpool City council for 5 years, has acted as a consultant for Michelin starred restaurants and has hosted so many tastings he’s lost count! Come in and he will share his passion for both food and wine and will take your taste buds on the most interesting journey they’ve ever been on!
We usually have a busy calendar of events here in Chester but for now they are all on hold. Whether you're looking for a wine tasting, gin tasting, whisky tasting or Champagne, we host an array of different tastings all year. We are regularly visited by wine importers and producers from all over the world who host tastings with us, and we always take the opportunity to show off our fantastic food alongside our wine! Well, why wouldn't we?
You can book places on our forthcoming tasting evenings here online, or call into the shop. You can also purchase Tasting Vouchers to give someone a great experience as a gift!
We also offer private tastings in store for groups, corporate clients and specialist event organisers. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
Many people view craft beer as the younger, hip cousin of real ale. While both reject the blandness of mass-produced beers, real ale focuses solely on traditional brewing methods, with most served from a cask via a hand pump in the pub. In contrast, craft beer embraces experimentation and innovation in search of new tastes and styles. The result is modern craft brews with distinct personalities that upend the status quo - this is not your father's beer! So what does make a craft beer? Continue reading
We're thrilled to tell you that our award-winning Cava producer and huge customer favourite Vilarnau has launched a pioneering organic, vegan, alcohol free fizz! Vilarnau is located in San Sadurní d’Anoia, close to Barcelona. We visited the vineyards a couple of years ago and were blown away by the location, their passion and their love for this most elegant of Spanish wine. They have now turned their expertise to sobriety with the launch of these two new zero alcohol sparkling wines. Continue reading
Truffles are a kind of fungus that grow under the ground. They are among the most valuable foodstuffs in the world. While French and Italian truffles are famous, English truffles are less well known but still prized for their culinary value. In the 19th and early 20th centuries England had a moderately thriving truffle industry. Continue reading
Keeping our range of wine fresh and new is a constant challenge for us. Balancing the need to keep customer favourites and best sellers on the shelf, whilst constantly keeping the range new and interesting is difficult to do without ending up needing an aircraft hangar! Those of you who know our shops will know that we are the antithesis of "hangar" so from time to time we have a good old review of our range. Continue reading
